Survey Research Shared Resource

The Survey Research Shared Resource provides to Mayo Clinic Cancer Center members support for the conduct of surveys. This support includes expert consultation, instrument development, sampling, mailing, telephoning, response tracking, instrument processing, data analysis and report writing. Although the Survey Research facility has been in existence since 1991, it first became a Cancer Center Shared Resource in 2003. To date, the Shared Resource has conducted close to 2,000 survey-based studies of various types including:

  • Large scale community surveys
  • Medical outcome and follow- up
  • Continuous quality improvement
  • Administrative issues such as employee satisfaction and patient satisfaction

In the area of cancer specifically, the Shared Resource has fielded a host of surveys aimed at:

  • Risk factor assessment
  • Obtaining outcomes following diagnosis or treatment
  • Recruitment for clinical trials
  • Assessing attitudes and behaviors related to cancer screening
  • Assessing the acceptability of cancer screening methods
  • Determination of family trees for genetic studies
  • Assessing satisfaction with cancer-related treatment and associated health care encounters
  • Assessing informational needs for cancer patients
  • Assessment of the willingness to help others to stop smoking (cancer prevention)
  • Psychological scale development pertinent to intervening on adolescents who use tobacco
  • Quality of life assessment in cancer patients

The Shared Resource also works in collaboration with the Center for Translational Science Activities, engaging in a number of projects, including:

  • Novel methodology development program
  • Research ethics incubator
  • Progress-tracking task force
  • Practice-based research network operations

Consultations with the Shared Resource include determining:

  • Aims and objectives of the study
  • Study population and sampling method
  • Study design (questionnaire, phone interview, focus group, etc.)
  • Budget and timeline establishment

Implementation services include:

  • Assistance in obtaining institutional approvals
  • Questionnaire design, interview scripts, and piloting/testing
  • Audience list preparation including:
    • Subject search and contact information
    • Proxy contact information
    • Vital status
    • Various demographic factors
    • Reseach authorization
    • Obtaining Mayo registration information
    • Updating Mayo registration with current information
  • Mail, web, and/or telephone surveys
  • Study/Response tracking services
  • Abstract and organize written comments
  • Follow-up with non-respondents
  • Data entry, cleaning, and analysis
  • Summary reports
  • Writing of methods sections for abstracts, manuscripts, and proposals

Mayo Clinic’s Survey Research Shared Resource is able to provide services in a cost-effective, timely manner to Cancer Center researchers at all three campuses – Phoenix/Scottsdale, Ariz.; Jacksonville, Fla.; and Rochester, Minn.
