Summary

My research interests include:

  • Development of an effective artificial pancreas system for patients with Type 1 diabetes using the closed-loop system of insulin delivery and glucose sensing.

This research effort is primarily funded by NIH. We are applying to other organizations and benefactors to fund our development of an artificial pancreas program. We also have recently joined the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Artificial Pancreas Consortium.

  • Effective and safe pancreas transplantation for type 1 diabetes

I work closely with Mayo's kidney/pancreas and transplant nephrology surgical teams to continually improve outcomes of this type of transplant. The program provides long-term insulin independence for more than 60% of our transplant patients; and freedom from hypoglycemia and ketoacidosis for more than 80% of transplant patients.

  • Stem cell therapy for type 1 diabetes

I collaborate with Mayo's gene therapy and regenerative medicine teams to develop stem cell therapy for patients with type 1 diabetes.
