My basic research interest includes understanding the mechanisms of hemodialysis graft failure. This is a significant problem as currently more than 300,000 patients are on renal replacement therapy requiring hemodialysis through either a polytetrafluoroethylene graft or arteriovenous fistula for their access.
The patency of these polytetrafluoroethylene grafts is dismal and currently ranges from 25 to 50 percent; and 50 to 60 percent for the arteriovenous fistulas. We have three post-doctoral fellows who work in our laboratory studying the mechanisms responsible for hemodialysis graft failure using animal models such as the mouse, rat, and pig to understand why hemodialysis grafts fail.
Our goal is to develop novel therapies that will improve patency of the hemodialysis vascular access that can be delivered using image guidance such as ultrasound or stents and balloons with coatings with the therapy of interest. Please see attached list of recent publications.
Our clinical research interest lies in peripheral atherosclerotic disease. We are interested in outcomes and treatment of renovascular hypertension caused by renal artery stenosis. In addition, we are interested in lower limb arterial revascularizations.
