William J. Tremaine, M.D.

The research of William J. Tremaine, M.D., focuses on the clinical aspects of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, ileal pouchitis and microscopic colitis.

Dr. Tremaine is interested in the natural history, epidemiology, diagnostic studies, and medical and surgical therapy of these diseases. He works in collaboration with colleagues in the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center to study the increased risk of cancer in patients with longstanding IBD and due to immune therapy for IBD.

• Clinical care of patients with Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and microscopic colitis
• Research on the natural history and clinical characteristics of IBD
• Research on ethical issues in the care of patients with IBD

Significance to patient care

Dr. Tremaine is currently interested in the role of pelvic floor dysfunction in the symptoms experienced by patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and those who have undergone ileal pouch-to-anal anastomoses.

He's also interested in the natural history of patients with upper gastrointestinal tract Crohn's disease and identifying best management practices for that group.
