CLINICAL SERVICE RESEARCH

The Program on Aging has also expanded its reach into the service of aging as well as the science of aging. The offering of support now includes an internal RFA for clinical services. The RFA specifically solicits projects that stimulate development of innovative clinical management approaches for the elderly, particularly those approaches that foster maintenance of health and independence in old age. Projects will be funded each academic year. Although applications in all areas of age-related research are welcome, applicants will indicate how their proposals will complement or advance clinical services.

The purpose of the clinical services pilots are to acquire information needed to select or design future meritorious studies in aging services, with the ultimate goal of submitting additional and competitive grant applications. Such projects may include, but are not limited to:

• Projects that provide community outreach to forestall and reduce hospitalization rates
• Multidisciplinary approaches to medication management to limit morbidity and mortality
• Organ or disease specific interventions to improve function
• Training programs for students, residents or fellows in the management of geriatric syndromes
• Services that impact home care and caregiver burden
• Treatment strategies to address transitions of care
• Clinical services to address frailty and vulnerability
• Programs and services that would impact home safety
