Independent Living

The Independent Living Program will develop and share technologies that will keep elderly individuals as independent as possible, for as long as possible. Mayo is drawing on its considerable expertise and strong track record in developing advanced technologies to promote independence; monitoring and predicting changes in function and clinical status; enacting and coordinating community-based pharmacological, physical and provider interventions; and educating patients and care-givers. Current resources include:

  • Biomedical and device engineering expertise
  • New miniaturized systems for remote monitoring activity, mobility, and physical and biochemical parameters
  • Bioinformatics-based data analysis approaches for predicting dysfunction and need for intervention based on remote monitoring data
  • Validated questionnaires and scales for diagnosing disease, causes of dysfunction, severity and functional state
  • Coordinated clinical charting systems across levels of care
  • Treatment algorithms for frailty, chronic disease, and acute complications
  • Internet-based systems for providing patients and families with advice
  • Subject populations and sites for developing and testing this technology
  • Stellar clinical research, epidemiological and systems biology expertise for conducting rigorous evaluation and outcomes research
