Strength of Suture-tendon Interface Increased by Eyelet ModificationPrincipal Investigator: Peter C. Amadio, M.D. Figure 1: Method for creating tendon eyelet. Postoperative mobilization is essential for improving the outcome after flexor tendon repair, although complications such as gap formation or tendon rupture can impair the outcome. Increasing the tendon-suture interface strength may prevent suture pullout and improve tensile strength. In this study, we enhanced the tendonsuture interface strength using EDC [1-Ethyl-3-(3- Dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide Hydrochloride] and standard bio-glue and measured the suture pullout strength (Fig. 1). Bio-glue eyelet increased 91% (+/- 51%) in strength and 31% (+/- 34%) in stiffness. EDC eyelet increased 64% (+/- 83%) in strength and 24% (+/- 23%) in stiffness. Thus, the concept of eyelet reinforcement in the tendon repair is a potential opportunity to increase the suture pullout strength. |
