Ph.D. Statistician: Division Of Biostatistics

Degree Requirement: Ph.D. in Statistics or Biostatistics, with emphasis in applied statistics

The applicant's primary duty will be to collaborate with medical staff on a wide variety of clinical and basic research studies as a leader of a statistical team. The consulting involves study design and analysis, manuscript preparation, and oral presentations. The position requires outstanding oral and written communication skills, self-direction, and the ability to direct activities of assigned support staff. Biomedical consulting experience is a definite plus. Familiarity with some statistical computer packages (SAS, Splus) is desirable. Although the salary for this position does not require extramural support, demonstrated ability to obtain funding is a significant strength.

Cancer Center Statistics

The candidate will work with the Cancer Center Statistics (CCS) unit of the Division to facilitate research among investigators within the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center (MCCCC) and the North Central Cancer Treatment Group (NCCTG). The primary responsibilities of the Ph.D. statisticians in CCS are:

  1. Serve as the lead statistician for two or more of the MCCCC tumor groups that develop and conduct MCCCC and NCCTG clinical and translational research programs for a specific tumor type (e.g., breast, lung) or special program areas (e.g., Phase I trials, cancer control).
  2. Serve as study statistician for all of the Phase III trials and many of the other studies conducted by the tumor groups for which she/he is the lead statistician.
  3. Assign, as appropriate, study statistician responsibilities to the Master degree statisticians in the tumor group team and provide advice and guidance as needed.
  4. Serve on MCCCC/NCCTG tumor group research review committees.
  5. Teach one 12-hour (1 graduate credit) module per year in the series of courses sponsored by the Dept. of Health Sciences Research, Mayo Clinic.
  6. Participate in methodologic research into statistical issues associated with MCCCC and NCCTG cancer research.
  7. Engage in scholarly activity and independent research of statistical methods and substantive biomedical applications.
