New treatment for advanced basal cell carcinoma

A study has led to FDA approval of the drug Erivedge (vismodegib), which shrank advanced basal cell carcinoma tumors in 43 percent of patients with locally advanced disease and in 30 percent of patients with metastasized disease.

New molecular mutation found in breast tumors

Researchers have discovered a new class of molecular mutation in various forms of breast cancer that may shed light on the development and growth of breast tumors and may provide a way to identify tumor subtypes.

Investigational drug improves survival for colorectal cancer patients

A phase III clinical trial found that an investigational drug called regorafenib slowed tumor progression and increased survival of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. Patients treated with the drug showed a 29 percent increase in overall survival.

Genome-guided breast cancer study may lead to customized treatment

The Mayo Clinic Cancer Center has launched a whole genome study to help physicians tailor chemotherapy for breast cancer patients based on their individual genomes and the genomes of their tumors.
