About Dr. Caviness
John Caviness, M.D., obtained a Bachelor of Science in chemistry at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., in 1982. In 1986, he received his M.D. degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, where he also completed an internship in internal medicine.
At Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., he completed a neurology residency in 1990 and an electroencephalography fellowship in 1991. As a Mayo Foundation Scholar, Dr. Caviness studied the clinical and electrophysiological characteristics of movement disorders at the University College London Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, London. While there, he studied with the late professor C.D. Marsden and other internationally renowned movement disorder experts. Dr. Caviness then joined the Department of Neurology at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. He is board certified in neurology, electroencephalography and other aspects of clinical neurophysiology.
Dr. Caviness' research interests are Parkinson's disease (cortical dysfunction), myoclonus, Huntington's disease and other choreas, and electrophysiology. He is also interested in the neurophysiology of cognition, including speech, speech perception and general cognition. Most of his investigator-initiated publications study electrophysiological markers of cerebral cortex function in Parkinson's disease and other Lewy body disorders.
Dr. Caviness is the founder and director of the Movement Disorders Laboratory at Mayo Clinic's campus in Arizona. Dr. Caviness is active within the clinical core program of the Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center at Mayo Clinic in Arizona and the Michael J. Fox initiative at Mayo Clinic and Banner Sun Health Research Institute. He is studying cognitive decline in Parkinson's disease and electrophysiological biomarker correlations and mechanisms.
