Course in Mayo Graduate School

The Center for Regenerative Medicine collaborates with Mayo Graduate School and the Mayo Clinic Center for Translational Science Activities to offer a regenerative medicine course.

The 12-lecture course, MPET 6820: "Regenerative Medicine: Principles to Practice," encompasses the discovery-translation-application continuum, enabling students to become proficient in key concepts underlying stem cell platforms and giving them insight into new therapeutic and diagnostic opportunities in regenerative medicine and surgery.

The course:

• Covers the fundamental aspects of developmental biology; totipotency, pluripotency and multipotency; lineage specification and transcription factor regulation; stem cell niche; nuclear reprogramming; and derivation of adult and embryonic stem cell populations
• Has a methodological emphasis on genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and systems biology, which highlight resolution of stem cell traits
• Includes applied topics, such as stem cell use in regenerative pharmacology, cell replacement therapy, diagnostics and toxicology; stem cell use as a vehicle for gene therapy; prospects for clinical therapy; stem cell banking; tissue engineering; ethical and regulatory affairs; intellectual property rights; and patenting issues
