NutritionThe Mayo Nutrition Core Group focuses on disorders resulting from abnormal nutrient intake and/or nutrient processing. Most prominent among these is obesity. The obesity research efforts include: 1) Prospective assessment of the outcomes of bariatric surgery; 2) Clinical trials of new weight loss medications; 3) NIH-supported research into the pathophysiology of obesity and regulation of physical activity; 4) Basic science research regarding the regulation of adipose tissue; and 5) Fatty-acid processing by skeletal muscle. The Nutrition Core Group members perform clinical research based in the General Clinical Research Center, as well as a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings. They collaborate with members of the Department of Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Anesthesiology, Radiology, and a variety of Internal Medicine subspecialties. Research into disorders that relate to hospital nutrition are also conducted. These efforts include studies of hospital nutrition assessment and the use of novel nutritional interventions for malnourished, hospitalized patients.
