Spatial (3-D) distribution of presynaptic VIP-like-IR on the surface of a neuron in the guinea pig IMG. Note that the majority of VIP-like-IR presynaptic endings (55.9 5.7% of the total neuron-associated VIP-like-IR-containing structures) are located on secondary and tertiary dendritic branches of the neuron. The IMG neuron was intracellularly injected with Lucifer Yellow, immunostained with appropriate antibodies, visualized with Cy5 and imaged using a confocal microscope. Images of the LY-filled neurons (colored grey) and associated immunoreactive sites (colored yellow) were volume reconstructed and superimposed using ANALYZE software. Scale bars, 50 m.
