OVERVIEWThe Gastrointestinal Physiology Laboratory is housed in the Guggenheim building. The aim of the laboratory is to further understand the regulation of gastrointestinal motility in both health and in disease. This laboratory works in close collaboration with the laboratory of Dr. Joseph Szurszewski and shares similar goals. The two laboratories collaborate on most projects with a shared interest in gastrointestinal smooth muscle cells, interstitial cells of Cajal, and enteric nerves. A close collaborative effort also exists with the laboratory of Dr. Michael Sarr, whose laboratory is based in the Alfred building at St. Marys Hospital. THE VIDEOThe video demonstrates the interaction between mechanosensitive calcium channels (BLUE), large conductance calcium activated potassium channels (GREEN), and the cell contractile state when mechanically stimulated by perfusion. |
