Statistical Genetics and Genetic Epidemiology (Schaid Research)

OVERVIEW

Our group is actively engaged in clinical and translational research. We are part of the Clinical Core of the Mayo Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC) and a Memory Disorder Clinic (MDC) in the Florida Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative. We are also part of the Alzheimer’s Disease Cooperative Study Group (ADCS) which is an NIA funded consortium to carry out clinical trials in Alzheimer’s Disease. As part of our ADRC activities we are involved in a number of studies related to cognitive impairment in African Americans. As part of an RO1 grant, we work closely with the Younkin laboratory in studying a blood test to predict some of the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Also we characterize patients and controls in a large genetic initiative to discover Late Onset Alzheimer’s Disease (LOAD) genes. With the Golde laboratory, we are involved in clinical trials to evaluate the role of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories in treating AD patients.

We take part in an NIA funded study on imaging of Frontotemporal Dementia patients. We work with the Hutton laboratory to find genes that may delay or prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. We collaborate with Tanis Ferman, M.D. and Dennis Dickson, M.D., on the clinical features and neuropathology of Lewy Body Disease.
