Overview
Excellence in research is an inseparable goal in the mission of the Division of Hematology. The focus is to improve the diagnosis and treatment of hematologic diseases.
Physicians and scientists with special interests in certain diseases work together as a team, or Disease Oriented Group. Each member of the team lends a particular expertise. Some members provide basic research skills, others provide clinical and clinical investigative skills.
Mayo Hematologists received over 5 million dollars of extramural funding in 1997. Research programs were supported principally by the National Institutes of Health, but also by foundations and industry. We benefit by support from Mayo Foundation including gifts from benefactors, patients and families.
Mayo Rochester hematologists published more than 65 papers in peer reviewed journals during the past year. They entered over 100 patients on clinical trials investigating new treatment programs. Mayo Hematologists play key roles in National Cooperative groups and many are recognized internationally for their work.
