Acute Myocardial Infarction

SUMMARY: Patients who survive a heart attack are at high risk of a subsequent attack or death. There are effective medicines that can reduce this risk. Health care providers are prescribing these medicines to patients, but patients stop taking them shortly after leaving the hospital.

The objective of this study is to learn how using a decision aid — a tool that helps patients understand the pros and cons of taking these medications — can help patients being discharged from the hospital make a decision about these medications and stick to their decision. We will also study how health care providers can routinely use these decision aids; and what patients need to do to integrate medication use into their daily lives.
