FOLIC ACID IN NASHIn this study, we hypothesize that folate supplementation will improve inflammation associated with NAFLD and improve biochemical markers. To determine the safety and efficacy of folic acid treatment for 6 months in patients with NAFLD and to investigate the presence of possible subclinical folate deficiency in patients with NAFLD, we designed an open label pilot study in which 20 patients with diagnosis of NAFLD will be treated with folic acid 1 mg a day for 6 months. This study has important therapeutic and mechanistic implications. The possibility of treating a progressive condition with such a safe drug should be strongly considered. In addition, clarifying the role of folate in NAFLD can enlighten its pathogenesis. |
