The Materials and Structural Testing Core at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., provides a full range of fabrication and testing services for both research and clinical applications.
Investigators and clinicians who use the core's services may be interested in determining the strength of tissues in response to clinical interventions, such as pharmaceuticals or surgery. Others are interested in how new devices, such as implants, or injuries may affect the motion of various joints and tissue properties.
Core staff members have backgrounds in mechanical engineering, physics, biomedical engineering, movement science and computer programming. Their areas of expertise include design and fabrication, material and kinematics testing, and data and image analysis.
Projects span a broad range of specialties, including dentistry, cardiology, gastroenterology, obstetrics and gynecology, and orthopedics, among others.
Directed by Kai-Nan An, Ph.D., the Materials and Structural Testing Core serves investigators at Mayo Clinic and other institutions.
