Patient intervention booklets specific to cigarette or smokeless tobacco use created by the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center physicians and Tobacco Treatment Specialists.

Based on Motivational Interviewing, the booklets are designed to be used in an interactive, patient-centered, comprehensive approach to the care of the patient with tobacco dependence.

Medications to Help You Stop Using Tobacco **

The medication booklet is intended to provide the patient with a general overview of medication options and guidelines on how medications can help them through the stopping process. Each medication description is accompanied by a photograph of the medication, dosage guidelines, side effects, and warnings and contraindications to use.

20-page booklet

Set of three laminated pages **

The laminated pages of illustrations, suitable for office display and patient education, highlight key learning points including:

1. Comparison of nicotine delivery to the brain via smoking versus nicotine delivery by nicotine replacement products,
2. Nicotinic receptors on brain cells in tobacco users and nontobacco users,
3. The general timeline of withdrawal symptoms and urges and how medications can help with those symptoms.

In addition, the smokeless graphics include instructions for patients on how to perform an oral self-examination.

Demonstration DVD My Path to a Smoke-Free Future

The DVD consists of 10 role-play scenarios demonstrating how to use the patient intervention booklet. The scenarios illustrate the flow of the material, how each page is introduced and how to engage the patient in the session and utilize specific tools within a motivational approach to facilitate behavior change.

Facilitator Guides for: My Path to a Smoke-Free Future or Your Path to Smokeless Tobacco Freedom

The Facilitator Guides provide page-by-page, specific information to better understand and utilize the patient intervention booklets. The guides provide a brief rationale for the content, key points that emphasize how to use each page and examples of phrases used to introduce and explain the content.
