The neural engineering lab is focused on two main areas of neurological research: deep brain stimulation and treatment of spinal cord injury.
Deep brain stimulation is employed in the clinical realm to treat parkinsonian disorders, tremors, and obsessive-compulsive disorders, although the exact neural network that is being stimulated is relatively unknown. The lab is exploring the functional anatomical networks of the brain using deep brain stimulation and functional magnetic resonance imaging in a swine model.
A second area of research focused on a potential treatment option for spinal cord injury uses technologies this lab has developed to translate novel deep brain stimulation technologies to record brain signals that correlate with muscle activation. Then, in real time, neuromodulation of the areas of interest within the spinal cord will be done to attempt to elicit movement in paralyzed limbs.
