As a cancer epidemiologist with a background in basic science, the primary objective of my research program at Mayo Clinic is to improve our overall understanding of urologic malignancies (e.g. renal, prostate and bladder cancers). More importantly, my ultimate goal is to help translate this new understanding into better treatment for our patients and better cancer prevention efforts for the population at large.
My research program combines the classic design and analytic methods of epidemiology with the high resolution capabilities of the basic sciences to peer inside the human cell and examine cancer at a molecular level. Using this combination of disciplines, we are currently conducting investigations to address pressing questions covering the entire natural history of urologic malignancies.
In support of these overall efforts, we have established three research registries here at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville. The Renal Mass Registry and the Prostate Cancer Registry house detailed information and valuable biospecimens (blood, urine and tumor tissue) on every patient treated for renal cancer and prostate cancer at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville. Our Non-cancer Controls Registry collects risk factor data as well as blood and urine specimens from cancer-free patients visiting Family Medicine at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville for routine check-ups. These registries provide a solid foundation for our translational research program for the next several decades.
