About the Center
Much is known today about the underlying genetic and biological mechanisms in polycystic kidney disease (PKD). The Mayo Translational PKD Center (MTPC) is focused on translating these basic findings into new and better treatments for PKD patients.
The center extends Mayo Clinic's strong tradition of PKD-related basic, translational and clinical research. Over the years, Mayo investigators have made many novel and important contributions to the understanding and characterization of PKD, and recently have moved these findings into preclinical and clinical trials.
PKD research in the center is collaborative and multidisciplinary, with PKD investigators working alongside Mayo clinicians and scientists with expertise in fields such as imaging, physiology, gastroenterology, molecular biology and genomics. This team approach means that promising therapies move more quickly from the lab to clinical trials to clinical practice.
Three core facilities supported by the center — Molecular Genetics and Proteomics, Model Systems, and Human Imaging — provide Mayo and non-Mayo investigators with access to state-of-the-science technical resources and services. Each core is also engaged in numerous developmental projects, which will lead to new and enhanced service offerings.
The center's efforts are further enhanced by significant Mayo resources, including the Center for Translational Science Activities and many institutional core facilities.
The MTPC was established in 2010 and is funded by a five-year P30 grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health.
