CLINICAL TRIALS

Genetic Epidemiology of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

IRB Number : 77-04

Trial Status : Open for Enrollment

Open for Enrollment Phase: I

Why is this study being done?

This study is being done primarily to determine whether symptoms that are related to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) -- such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation -- run in families and to see if there are genes that explain IBS symptoms. The study will also try to determine if there are factors (e.g., diet) or features (e.g., greater severity) that characterize symptoms that run in families. Our ultimate goal is to find out what causes IBS so that we may develop better treatments.

Who is Eligible to Participate in the Study?

We are looking for individuals from under-represented racial groups with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) to participate in a family study. IBS is a common, chronic disorder characterized by recurrent abdominal discomfort, along with diarrhea or constipation type symptoms. Participation would consist of completing a symptom questionnaire, donating a small sample of blood, and providing mail contact information for first-degree relatives. Your relatives would be asked to complete a symptom questionnaire. No Mayo Clinic visits are required. Remuneration to all participants is offered. If interested, please contact Annie Almazar at 507-284-5010 (almazarelder.ann@mayo.edu).

Minimum Age:

18 years
