INTRACELLULAR CALCIUM REGULATION AND EXCITATION-CONTRACTION COUPLINGOur laboratory is also examining the regulation of intracellular calcium which forms an essential signal for many physiological processes. In skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle cells, elevation of intracellular calcium couples external excitation by neural or chemical factors to mechanical contraction of the fiber. In these studies, we are using state-of-the-art real-time confocal microscopy to image changes in intracellular calcium in response to stimulation.
