About Dr. Spelsberg
Dr. Spelsberg has received various honors in teaching in both the Mayo Medical Schools, as well as for his research. He has served as a Distinguished Lecturer at ten universities, and received his university's Distinguished Alumnus Award. His laboratory has received over dozens of scientific awards from national societies over the past 15 years. He has presented 50 plenary and symposia lectures, has authored more than 350 papers and reviews, and has been awarded 10 U.S. patents.
His laboratory currently studies the molecular biology and genetics of bone disease, hormone resistance in breast cancer, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. He has had continuous NIH funding for the past 34 years and currently has three NIH grants and two Foundation grants. His fellows have won ~36 awards from national organizations over the past 14 years.
Dr. Spelsberg has served in several administrative positions at the Mayo Clinic, including Head of the Section of Biochemistry, Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, as well as Secretary and then President of the Mayo Clinic Staff, and a member of the Mayo Staff Officers and Councilors. Dr. Spelsberg has served on numerous editorial boards for scientific journals and on various NIH/NSF review committees and participated in many NIH site visits. He has served on several committees for national organizations, including the Governing Council of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. He holds the George M. Eisenberg Professorship, as well as an endowed Mayo Distinguished Investigator position in medical research at Mayo, and was the Director of Mayo Rochester Medical Genomics Education Program. He is President of the Board of Directors of the Eisenberg Foundation.
