SummaryDr. Bingener-Casey has had a long-term interest in the outcomes of minimally invasive surgery and endoscopy. Her current research focus is on the novel concept of Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES). This method uses the stomach, colon, or vagina as entry point into the abdomen rather than abdominal wall incisions. The proposed benefits of NOTES include decreased invasiveness by avoiding the abdominal wall as access to the peritoneal cavity, theoretically leading to less operative trauma with decreased pain, inflammation and operative stress. Small, flexible instrumentation currently in use for endoscopy and newly developed tools are being investigated for this purpose. A team of surgeons and advanced endoscopists has been assembled to study NOTES and its possible benefits. Recent publicationsSee a listing of my publications Education
