Summary

  • Neuromuscular physiology and pharmacology. Extensive research in monitoring of evoked neuromuscular responses, and clinical applications of monitoring of neuromuscular function in surgical patients. Effects of depolarizing and non-depolarizing muscle relaxants on monitoring of neuromuscular function. Novel methods of monitoring of evoked responses in patients recovering from anesthesia and surgery. Investigations of novel agents for reversal of neuromuscular block.
  • Physiology of spinal anesthesia. Application of physiologic principles in the clinical setting; measurement of the zones of differential block induced by spinal and epidural anesthesia.
  • Pre-emptive analgesia and patient outcome. Research in mechanisms of peripheral and central sensitization that follow tissue injury. Mechanisms for the development of chronic pain syndromes following peripheral tissue injury.
  • Patient safety. Involved in research and review of studies designed to improve the safety of surgical patients undergoing anesthesia. Participating in national foundations dedicated to advancing the safety of surgical patients undergoing anesthesia (Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation, APSF).
