Summary

My research laboratory focuses on clinical and translational research in bone metabolism, nutrition and aging using intensive clinical research centre studies, mouse models, immunology, cell biology and molecular biology. The central theme of all our work is understanding the role of stem cells in normal physiology, aging and disease processes.

Examples of my current research interests include 1) Pathophysiology of nutrient and bone interactions. This work investigates the role of novel gastrointestinal hormones in the acute and chronic regulation of bone turnover, examining the role in growth and aging and investigates the key homeostatic mechanisms involved in regulating the circadian rhythm of bone turnover. 2) Osteoimmunology and the pathophysiology of bone disease. The focus of this work is investigating the role of inflammatory markers and stem cells in the regulation of bone turnover. 3) Caloric restriction, inflammation and aging. The main focus of this work is to investigate the nutritional regulation of stem cells, progenitor cells and lineage specific cells in aging and diseases of aging.

Additional areas of research interest include the clinical role and cost-effectiveness of bone measurements (peripheral densitometry, ultrasound, MXA, bone size measurements) and laboratory tests (genetic polymorphisms, bone turnover markers) in the evaluation of osteoporosis and fracture risk. In addition, we are investigating how and why patients comply with medication and determining the effect of corticosteroids on bone metabolism and fracture threshold.
