Summary

Research Interests:

  1. Corneal transparency
Clinical studies are in progress to determine the long-term effects of different surgical procedures on corneal transparency and the effect on vision. Studies include patients who have had different forms of corneal transplantation and different forms of corneal refractive surgery. Laboratory studies are being performed to find new methods of improving the transparency of opacified corneas, and to help establish relationships between the cellular structure of the cornea and vision.
  2. Transplantation techniques
Clinical studies are in progress to assess the outcomes of different techniques of corneal transplantation for endothelial disorders, such as Fuchs' endotrelial corneal dystrophy. The studies will assess visual outcomes and transplant survival.
  3. Corneal endothelial cell transplantation
Laboratory studies are in progress to develop an endothelial cell transplantation technique which will benefit patients with Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy.
  4. Fuchs' dystrophy genetics study
A multicenter study to determine the genetic basis of Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy, a condition that results in swelling of the cornea with poor vision, and presently is treated by corneal transplantation.
  5. Fuchs' dystrophy grading and prospective studies
Ongoing studies are helping us to determine novel grading methods for Fuchs' dystrophy; and changes in corneas with Fuchs' dystrophy over time.
