SummaryThe major interestes of Marc Patterson, M.D., include Niemann-Pick disease, type C (NPC) and other lysosomal diseases, congenital disorders of glycosylation and pediatric multiple sclerosis. His research activities have included laboratory studies at the University of Queensland in neuropharmacology; and National Institutes of Health (NIH) in lysosomal diseases (LSDs). His participation in clinical studies includes therapeutic trials and natural history studies at NIH, Columbia University and Mayo Clinic. His focus is on the development of novel small molecule therapies for LSDs, and was principal investigator of a prospective trial of miglustat in NPC and of a retrospective study of the use of miglustat in NPC in clinical practice. These studies led to approval of this agent for treatment of neurologic manifestations of NPC in the European Union, Canada, Brazil, Australia and Taiwan. Dr. Patterson is participating in the development of therapeutic protocols for metachromatic dystrophy and globoid cell leukodystrophy. He is a member of the Human Glycosylation Disorders Network, a member of the Steering Committee of the NIH-funded Lysosomal Disease Network, as well as the leader of its educational core and PI of a longitudinal study of cognition in Niemann-Pick disease, type C.
