Summary

Ravinder Singh, Ph.D., is currently the director of the Mayo Endocrinology Laboratory. He has a focused area of investigation that has broad applicability to the field.

Dr. Singh's studies application of liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometric (LC-MS/MS) to clinical laboratory analysis. He has published his work on originally developed LC-MS/MS methods including such analytes as cortisol, synthetic corticosteroids, metanephrines, estradiol, vitamin D, and urine albumin among others.

Many of the methods which Dr. Singh has developed are now considered reference methods; and have subsequently been utilized for method standardization efforts, as well as establishing clinical disease correlates, which he has published with his collaborators.

As a result, the clinical diagnosis of Cushing's disease, pheochromocytoma and congenital adrenal hyperplasia have been improved. Dr. Singh also is focused on increasing the throughput of the LC-MS/MS methods in the clinical laboratory.

The Endocrinology Laboratory currently is performing 3,500 tests per day for determining vitamin D deficiency using online extraction and LC-MS/MS methods. The volume of Vit-D testing has surpassed the testing performed by an automated analyzer in large reference lab. His work defines the types of contributions to the field that should be strived for by an exemplary clinical chemist.
