Focus areas

• Kidney disease and stroke, specifically whether renal biomarkers (glomerular filtration rate, albuminuria and cystatin C) are predictors of stroke recurrence or markers of stroke severity and stroke subtype
• Meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials to evaluate different antithrombotic agents in stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation
• Use of simulation in stroke education for neurology residents at Mayo Clinic in Arizona

Significance to patient care

The identification of the relationship between renal biomarkers and risk of future stroke will allow additional interventions for stroke prevention. Enhanced education for current trainees will improve the quality of future professionals.
