SummaryDr. Brott's research interests center in the study of cerebrovascular disease. He is national Co-PI for the NINDS-funded Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy vs Stent Trial (CREST). This multi-center randomized controlled trial will answer whether carotid artery surgery is superior to carotid artery stenting in the prevention of ischemic stroke. He is also engaged in studies of genetic susceptibility to ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. He is national Co-PI for the NINDS-funded Siblings With Ischemic Stroke Study and for the NINDS-funded Ischemic Stroke Genetics Study (ISGS). Dr. Brott is also active in the study of cerebrovascular therapeutics. He is site PI for the NINDS-funded Insulin Resistance in Ischemic Stroke (IRIS) study. He Chairs the Data Safety and Monitoring Board for the international phase III trial of recombinant factor VIIa as urgent treatment for spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage. With his clinical investigator partner, James F. Meschia, Dr. Brott collaborates with clinical colleagues at Mayo Clinic Rochester and Arizona and with colleagues in the basic sciences at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville and the National Institute of Aging.
