The main areas of research for Elizabeth J. Carey, M.D., include the evaluation of patients for liver transplantation, the development and management of complications after liver transplantation, and new treatments for the cholestatic liver diseases.

Focus areas

• Fitness for liver transplantation. After the implementation of the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score for allocation of donor organs, liver transplant candidates have become sicker and more debilitated as they await liver transplantation. Many candidates become too sick to undergo transplantation, or have extremely complicated and protracted post-transplant courses without full recovery. Dr. Carey is working to develop objective measures of fitness to help select candidates most appropriate for liver transplantation.
• Development of diabetes mellitus after liver transplantation. In conjunction with the kidney transplant team, Dr. Carey is looking at identifying risk factors and creating a predictive model for the development of new onset diabetes after liver transplantation.
• Cholestatic liver disease. Dr. Carey is also interested in new treatments for the cholestatic liver diseases.
