SummaryThe focus of Dr. Charkoudian's research is on sympathetic neural control of the circulation in humans, as related to the regulation of body temperature and blood pressure. She is interested in integrated physiological mechanisms of cardiovascular control in healthy humans as well as in age-related diseases including type 2 diabetes. She currently holds a NIH R01 grant to study mechanisms of thermoregulatory control of the skin circulation in type 2 diabetes mellitus. She is also interested in interactions among mechanisms of control of blood volume, cardiac output and baroreflex control of the sympathetic nervous system, as evaluated using direct microneurographic measurements of sympathetic neural activity. Dr. Charkoudian is Assistant Professor of Physiology in the Department of Physiology & Biomedical Engineering, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Her research involves collaborations with investigators in the Departments of Anesthesiology, Neurology and Medicine (Division of Endocrinology).
