Summary

The Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center has three programs: Treatment, Education and Research. I have been involved in epidemiology and clinical research for 17 years and, for the past 12 years, I have been the Research Program Coordinator of the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center. Through the years, the Nicotine Research Program has undertaken more than 110 research trials, including prospective clinical trials, retrospective chart reviews and survey research. We have been active strategists in both multi-site and multiple country studies of rather considerable complexity. Because tobacco use and dependence crosses all medical disciplines, our collaborative work is designed to be inclusive of investigators from a range of disciplines such as psychology, medical oncology, internal medicine, cardiology and anesthesia. In addition, we have dedicated staff in other Mayo-affiliated sites such as Albert Lea, MN, and LaCrosse, WI. My own research interests have focused on the areas of community-based interventions for tobacco cessation, including work with female smokers, adolescent smokers, young adult tobacco users, Alaskan Natives who use tobacco and other diverse ethnic groups on a national and international basis.
