Summary

I have been actively studying esophageal disease for over twenty years. Specific areas of interest include advances in esophageal motility and reflux monitoring, treatment trials directed at esophageal symptoms including typical (heartburn and regurgitation) and atypical symptoms. Recently we have expanded our research into upper gastrointestinal disorders that are worsened with aging, including dysphagia and most recently Barrett's esophagus. Also, we are studying advances in endoscopic imaging of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Treatment trials have addressed all aspects of esophageal disease as well as selected trials into other ?functional? gastrointestinal disorders including dyspepsia and constipation.

A major goal of this program is to become more integrated with the other Mayo sites, which is already happening in Barrett's esophagus and beginning to occur in esophageal motility. We believe that a common approach to esophageal disease can lead to advances in research, education and clinical practice.
