Clinical Profile

Summary

My research interests are directed toward a better understanding of the relationship between the patient and physician. As the clinical relationship is the context in which all care is delivered, a thorough understanding of its dynamics is essential to achieving the outcomes anticipated from biomedical intervention.

I lead the Physician-Patient Interaction Research Interest Group in the Division of General Internal Medicine which provides a forum for hypothesis generation, protocol review, and discussion.

The specific research endeavors of the program include:

Examination of patient and physician factors in difficult physician-patient interactions
Exploration of the concept of uncertainty and tacit knowledge
Investigating the role of patient personality traits in satisfaction and other outcomes
Development of curricula in patient-physician communications.
