The research interests of Suryakanth R. Gurudu, M.D., include colon polyp prevention, complex polypectomy techniques (to avoid surgical resection of colon) and hereditary colon cancer syndromes.

Focus areas

Dr. Gurudu is involved in several studies to improve the quality of colon preparation and polyp detection, as well as enhance the overall effectiveness of colonoscopy in preventing colon cancer.

His other research interests are in establishing the role of small bowel capsule endoscopy and balloon-assisted enteroscopy in the management of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding and other small bowel pathology.

Significance to patient care

Colon cancer is the third-leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. Unlike other cancers, colon cancer usually develops from precancerous polyps, which can be detected and removed easily during colonoscopy. Dr. Gurudu's research will directly help patients by improving their quality of colonoscopy, early detection and prevention of colon cancer.
