Our research focuses on the following:

Screening Trials for the Early Detection of Lung Cancer: These trials have involved the use of low dose spiral CT scans and sputum cytology for detection asymptomatic and early stage lung cancer. We are collaborating with investigators from other institutions to try and develope biomarkers in the sputum and blood that would be indicators of early lung cancer.

Clinical trials for the treatment of advanced lung cancer and malignant pleural mesothelioma: Currently, I am the PI on a treatment trial for extensive stage small cell lung cancer. This trial is being conducted at Mayo Clinic and the North Central Cancer Treatment Group (NCCTG). Currently, I am the Chair of the Lung Committee of the NCCTG.

Studies of sputum cytology and flourescence is-situ hybridization (FISH) of sputum and bronchoscopic samples: The goal of these studies are to try and develop early sputum markers of lung cancer.
