Summary

Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a new method of imaging the heart. Equipment has recently been developed by commercial providers to selectively image the heart and blood vessels. This exciting new technology allows the physician to obtain information about the heart not possible with current imaging tools like echocardiography and nuclear imaging. Cardiac MRI may in some cases replace the need for coronary angiography. The following cardiac conditions can be uniquely imaged with MRI at the Mayo Clinic.

  • Coronary artery disease (including pharmacological stress testing)
  • Myocardial infarction
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Pericardial disease
  • Hemochromotosis
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Valvular heart disease
  • Right ventricular dysplasia

This work is done in colaboration with the Division of Body MRI in Radiology at the Mayo Clinic directed by Dr. Kimberley Amrami.
