Summary

Islet Transplantation for type 1 diabetes mellitus

A multi-disciplinary group is working to start a Human Islet Transplant Program at Mayo Clinic, Rochester. We are currently preparing our IND for submission to the FDA. The effort involves Endocrinology, nephrology, Kideny/Pancreas transplant Surgery and the Human Cell Therapy Facility (Laboratory Medicine).

We are also developing a translational research program in Islet transplantation.

Insulin therapy in type 1 diabetes mellitus

Our Clinical Trials research team completed two randomized clinical trials in type 1 diabetes. The first used a temedicine strategy to improve glycemic status. The second trial compared Ultralente and glargine insulin as basal insulin preparartions in type 1 diabetes.

Transgenic mouse models to study type 1 diabetes mellitus

I am a co-investigator with Dr Chella David on an AMerican Diabetes Association Grant utilizing HLA transgenic mice to understand the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes. We have shown that the HLA molecules associated with type 1 diabetes in humans are not sufficient to develop type 1 diabetes in transgenic mouse models with diabetes susceptible mouse background genes. We are currently developing HLA transgenic mice that spontaneously develop type 1 diabetes. Such mice will enable better understanding of the molecular events leading to type 1 diabetes and will also serve as preclinical models to test immunotherapies capable of preserving insulin sectretion in type 1 diabetes.
