Summary

Christopher McGregor, M.D., is a pioneer in the field of transplantation. He performed the first successful (one-year survival) lung transplant in Europe; the first successful (one-year survival) infant heart transplant in the U.K.; and the first combined heart-lung-liver transplant (one-year survival) in the U.S.

Xenotransplantation. The principal focus in the preclinical xenotransplantation laboratory is optimization of immunosuppression following xenotransplantation, with specific studies on the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of humoral rejection. This program has the world's leading outcomes in cardiac xenotransplantation at the present time.

Mechanisms and prevention of chronic rejection of the heart following transplantation. The principal causes of death after the first three months following heart transplantation is accelerated transplant atherosclerosis. Studies of adenoviral-mediated cardiac gene therapy in modifying this process is ongoing. This work is supported by the National Institutes of Health.
