SummaryMy research interests focus on the biology, pathogenesis and treatment of bone marrow based myeloid diseases. Specifically these diseases run a spectrum from acute myeloid leukemia to the chronic myeloid diseases both myelodysplastic syndrome and myeloproliferative disorders (essential thrombocythemia, polycythemia vera, and myelofibrosis with myeloid metaplasia). My research is divided into laboratory efforts and direct clinical therapeutic trials using novel therapies originating from laboratory observations. In our myeloid laboratory (in collaboration with Dr.'s Ayalew Tefferi and Dr. Scott Kaufmann) we 1) investigate pathogenetic mechanisms of myeloid disease through genomics, proteomics, and studies of apoptotic resistance 2) we evaluate through in vitro models novel therapeutic agents of interest 3) discern the clinical utility of various diagnostic markers 4) perform ancillary studies in support of our clinical trials. These laboratory efforts are supported both by the National Cancer Institute, The Myeloproliferative Foundation, and the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center. In addition to our laboratory work we have been very active in evaluating new agents in clinical trials especially for myelofibrosis with myeloid metaplasia. In the recent past we have studied thalidomide, etanercept, imatinib mesylate, pirfenidone, suramin, interferon alpha, anagrelide, R115777 with upcoming trials with revimid, velcade, combination trials witrh thalidomide to name a few. We are determined to improve the understanding and treatment of myeloid disease. Recent publicationsSee a listing of my publications Education
