Summary

In general, traditional neuroimaging has failed to be useful for the diagnosis and prognosis of psychiatric disease; psychiatric disorders are diagnosed based purely on clinical history. The goal of my research is to develop a new tool for diagnosing psychiatric disorders that could help psychiatrists objectively diagnose such diseases.

Currently I am using a technique called magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) to study patients with bipolar disorder. We have found some exciting preliminary results, and are further refining our techniques. I work closely with two talented psychiatrists in the Department of Psychiatry; such interdisciplinary research efforts between Psychiatry and Radiology are necessary to drive the work forward.

I also have considerable interest and experience with diffusion tensor imaging, another imaging technique that may one day prove useful for the diagnosis of psychiatric disease.
