SummaryMy research involves diagnostic tests and treatment approach in the management of patients with seizure disorders. Recent focus of my research has been on the development of advanced techniques of imaging for localizing the seizure focus for epilepsy surgery. A product of this activity is the Subtraction Ictal SPECT Co-registered to MRI (SISCOM) technique, which improves both the detection of seizure focus and the outcome of subsequent epilepsy surgery. Continuing research in this area utilizes advanced statistical methods called Statistical Parametric Mapping to increase the yield of SPECT studies in epilepsy. A major part of my research has also been in the area of the usefulness of brain waves called EEG, with or without video recording, in differentiating different types of spells and in accurately pinpointing the source of seizures. Our laboratory is heavily involved in research that use both clinically available tests and advanced investigative tools in detecting EEG signatures of seizure activity. Another area of my research is morbidity and mortality in persons with epilepsy, especially injuries due to seizures and the phenomenon of Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP). As part of an international effort to solve this devastating condition, I have chaired the Joint SUDEP Task Force of the American Epilepsy Society and the Epilespy Foundation.
