Summary

Perioperative outcomes are important factors to consider when evaluating anesthetic and surgical processes, variations in practice, and patient safety. Most of my studies are performed within the Anesthesiology Clinical Research Unit and focus on finding associations between rare events and potential instigating or complicitous factors. These perioperative rare events include things such as pulmonary aspiration, bronchospasm, dysreflexias, vision loss, central and peripheral neuropathies, and death.

Individuals involved in these studies often include members of various surgical departments, epidemiologists, and statisticians. Several of these studies have extended beyond Mayo into multiple institutions, including those of our Mayo Clinic Jacksonville and Mayo Clinc Arizona practices.
