In 1998, Mayo Clinic was designated by the National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) as a Traumatic Brain Injury Model System (TBIMS). The Mayo Clinic TBIMS is one of 14 facilities in the United States supported by a grant from the NIDRR (NIDRR; grant # H133A070013-01). The Mayo Clinic TBIMS is designed to provide services along the continuum of care after TBI – from the initial physical examination after injury to community participation – integrated into a team of providers working together to achieve the ultimate objective of NIDRR: to maximize the inclusion and social integration, health and function, employment and independent living of individuals of all ages with disabilities related to TBI. As a TBIMS, our research program is directly aligned with the NIDRR Mission of improving the lives of individuals who experience traumatic brain injury (TBI) and of their families and communities, by creating and disseminating new knowledge about the natural course of recovery, rehabilitation treatment and outcomes following TBI.
The Mayo Clinic TBIMS is part of Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Rochester, and the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. With over 31,000 health care providers, extensive outpatient facilities, nearly 2,000 hospital beds, and a level I trauma center that serves virtually all people with moderate to severe TBI in the region, Mayo Clinic Rochester is a world resource that hosts 1.5 million patient visits each year from people of highly diverse ethnic, racial, cultural, and religious backgrounds. Despite Mayo Clinic’s status as a world class medical center, nearly 80% of its patients come from Minnesota and adjoining states. Most people with brain injury served at Mayo Clinic come from this largely rural region in the upper Midwest.
The primary mission of the Mayo Clinic TBIMS is to study the course of long-term recovery after TBI and to develop, provide and evaluate innovative services to address identified needs for service coordination and community reintegration for persons with traumatic brain injury. The Mayo Clinic TBIMS has been funded continuously since 1998 with the current funding cycle being 2007-2012.
