In 1998, Mayo Clinic was designated by the National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) as a TBIMS. The Mayo Clinic Traumatic Brain Injury Model System (TBIMS) is one of 16 facilities in the United States supported by a grant from the National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR).
The primary mission of the Mayo Clinic TBI Model System is to study the course of long-term recovery after traumatic brain injury and to develop, provide and evaluate innovative services to address identified needs for service coordination and community reintegration for persons with traumatic brain injury.
Mayo Clinic was recently granted $1.852 million in direct and indirect costs from the National Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) to continue the Mayo Traumatic Brain Injury Model System (TBIMS) over the next five years. Research and information collected from patients who are part of the TBIMS are contributed to the TBI National Data Center, the largest prospective database in the world investigating brain injury.
